The new Machinery Directive was published on the 9th of June 2006, but it wasn’t applicable until the 29th of December 2009. The Directive promotes harmonisation through a combination of mandatory health and safety requirements and voluntary harmonised standards.

Major work is currently under way to revise the 600 or so existing harmonised standards in order to harmonize these with the new Machinery Directive.

The list of standards harmonised to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC was first published in the Official Journal on 8 September 2009, though a revised list and additional amendments have been published more recently (see Further information). Directive 2006/42/EC is a revised v ersion of the Machinery Directive, the first version of which was adopted in 1989. The Directive has the dual aim of harmonising the health and safety requirements applicable to machinery on the basis of a high level of protection of health and safety, while ensuring the free circulation of machinery on the EU market. The EU Declaration of conformity assistant is the most complete web-application for the European Standards Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC – Presumption of conformity and harmonised standards (Article 7) 2. Machinery manufactured in conformity with a harmonised standard, the references to which have been published in the Official Journal of the European Union, shall be presumed to comply with the essential health and safety requirements covered by such a harmonised standard. It is not obligatory to comply with Harmonised Standards, but doing so provides a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements of the relevant directive.
